Germination- warmed vs. room temperature

IMG_2849.JPG
Question: Does the temperature of the germination medium have any
effect on the lettuce seed germination?

The top trays germinated at room temperature while the trays on the right
germinated with a heated pad under the medium. We observed that the
heated tray seedlings were leggier and thinner (shown right)
as compared to the room temperature sprouts shown below.

Preparing the hydroponics system

Blue and Red LED Grow lights for half of the system and
a flourescent "Gro-light" for the other half.

Water is pumped up to the hydroponics system from a 40 gallon fish tank with
goldfish located below. This provides a nutrient film of water to the roots of the
lettuce growing in the troughs.

Windowsill with baby lettuce growing in soil

A small Raft-style hydroponics system (below) is set up by the windowsill next to
the typical soil growing medium seedlings.
